About Holi
In India, Holi announces the arrival of spring and the passing of winter. The festival breathes an atmosphere of social merriment. Every nook and corner presents a colorful sight. Young and old alike are covered with a myriad of colors. People in small groups are seen singing, dancing and throwing colors on each other. Though liquid colors are used in India (where it’s warm), we only use dry powder corn starch colors here
Tips for Holi day
- The dry powders may stain hair & clothes, so do not wear your Sunday’s finest. To avoid and/or minimize stain, vigorously shake out all dry excess powder before stepping into a shower, or throwing your clothes in the wash. Once the caked dry colors get wet, it is hard to get out. However, if one can shake as much as possible out while dry, there is a good chance of not having pink hair for the next month.
- Do not throw colors into people’s eyes or mouth. It is even more fun to rub the colors, into the hair, back of the neck, and cheeks. You may wish to wear sunglasses to cover the eyes and/or dusk mask for the mouth. Anyone with asthma or any other breathing issues should avoid color events, same advice if you are allergic to corn starch.
- Do not wear contacts
- Good idea to bring plastic seat covers for your drive home as applicable. That or bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag for your festival clothes.
